Contactless payment

Customers don't want to use cash anymore and don't want to touch their credit card terminals either? So what should we do?

Welcome! It's a new world!

Could it be because this sentence was reported in the latest Bloomberg article?

"Even with retail stores cleaning more often than ever—if they’re open at all—handling cash or touching payment keypads stands out as a major risk.”

Now it makes perfect sense. Interestingly, many merchants feel the same way. They also don't want customers to touch anything on the front-desk including POS. Many merchants attached ‘Please use contactless’ on their POS.

Haven't switched to contactless yet? You're not late though. It wasn't long Walmart went completely contactless with its payment system.

No matter how you feel, no one wants to hand you cash or touch your handset anymore.

What you have to decide is, ‘So I have to change too’ or ‘How much will that affect sales? I will not change!’. If you don't change it, you'll probably get more attention from customers. However, if you are not ahead of the times, but you think you will at least follow them, you can change it a lot easier than you think. However, if you think you will at least follow the trends even though you can't lead them, you can change or prepare the equipment a lot easier than you think.

Currently, contactless payments usually use two technologies. 1) Wirelessly communicate with the terminal with a smartphone 2) Shake a credit card using the technology built into the card near the terminal. The technology used by smartphones is called near field communication or NFC.

Technology for contactless payment

When making a purchase using a smartphone, customers use an app on their phone, usually using Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. So, no matter which POS you use, for contactless you need to make sure that the terminal you choose can accept Apple Pay, Google Pay and NFC.

Are these technologies as secure as swiping or inserting cards? It is secure because it sends the same unique one-time token to the terminal for each transaction. Tokens do not contain card details, so even if the purchase is not completed and is aborted, the tokens cannot be used for other purchases. This means that switching to contactless does not compromise security.

If you haven't yet switched to offering contactless payment options at the point of sale, people say you'll experience a gradual decline in sales opportunities. Accepting contactless payments is now emerging as one of the many criteria customers use when choosing a Merchant. It's sad that Covid-19 has changed a lot, but that doesn't mean you should lose yours for a small reason in the world changing.
